March 29th, 2010 by · 1 Comment · ENG 102

This article is about the relationship between prejudice and stereotypes. Both of them are the reasons for racism. According to the article, prejudice is related to the stereotypes. When you make prejudice, you are also making stereotyping, too. So this can bring about to racism. I chose this article because there are also some examples from South Africans. In American society, people are stereotyping and there is a prejudice to South African people . This can be a useful article  for my research paper in order to strenghten my thesis statement.

In this article, authors emphasize on two things about the reasons of racism which are physical attractiveness and ethnicity. According to the article, in American society, people are categorized with their physical attractiveness. The more attractive person is more above than the unattractive one.  There is also another example that cause racism; ethnicity. I will use these reasons in my research paper. Children treatment is also related to these issues. Families have an important role while treating children and they can intercept their children not to make a contrast between attractive and non-attractive people.

This site is not an article but a presentation. I chose this site because it covers why racism exists and the reasons given which  I found it useful to write in my research paper. In this presentation, there are some reasons about why racism exists. “Prejudice” is the most considered example given for the reasons for racism. Prejudices of people blaze to racism because it is easier to judge people instead of learning their cultures . Prejudices and also laziness of people cause big problems for all humanity. In order not to make prejudices, we have to learn other cultures and this can also be possible with the high level of education.

RESEARCH PAPER ( INITIAL ENTRY )

March 21st, 2010 by · 1 Comment · ENG 102

I will write a research paper about racism. Racism is a social issue that has to be considered around every places that exist. I think that people should have equal rights and people should not be divided into groups just because they have different skin colours or etc.. I will argue this issue and i will support my thoughts with clear examples. For this, i will make a Websearch. Up until now, i found a site which can be useful for my research paper .”http://www.psych.umn.edu/courses/summer06/songs/psy3301/lectures_summer06/Stereotypes,Racism%20&%20Discrimination-Coping%20(Summer%2006)_WEB%206%20slides.pdf“. I will also read some articles from black and white authors both in order to be more convincing in my research paper.

Stereotyping racial groups is still very common in societies. In the story “Black Men and Public spaces”, Brent Staples describes the fear that people have of black men in public areas, and clearly points out what the stereotype looks like. The author emphasised on the black people’s difficulties living in public areas because of their skin colours . Brent Staples is also a black man , so he gave some examples of how the black men treated unfairly in public places.

“HAILING WHILE BLACK” By Shelby Steele

In the article,  there are some important concepts that the author emphasized on . Segregation, multiculturalism and racial profiling. These concepts are all related to racism. The author concerned about the American people’s insensitivity to racism. I do not know why but the author thinks that Americans have stopped defending their identities. In my opinion, because the author is black , he defended African Americans but i think his example is not a good proof that there is a racism in America . At that time, i made some research and i see that the robbery ratio of black people is too high so taxi drivers sometimes abstain from taking them to their cabs. So ı think his argument is totally acceptable but his support to this idea is inadequate.

“A PARTY DOWN AT THE SQUARE “

March 15th, 2010 by · No Comments · ENG 102

This story was told by a white American boy that saw a man get burned in a fire. He is a nigger. I believe its supposed to be from back in the day but there was a plane and electric lines so it couldn’t be too old. There was a man getting burned down in front of the courthouse. He was a black man so this was a racial story. The young white American  boy in the story was talking like that was all he was use to. In this story , there are lots of metaphors used. There are always same words used to describe events or people which are, “like and as”. This story is completely about racism which the White Americans’ cruelty to African- Americans.

Who Is a Whiz Kid ? by TED GUP

In the article, there is a belief that Asian people are good at Mathematics. This show us that people are categorized by these kinds of stereotypes. I think both positive and negative stereotypes are negative actually. This belief can upset people in their future lives. During childhood, if you put pressure on children to be a mathematician or anything that children do not want to be , this will affect children lives negatively.  I also think that, categorizing people into groups can cause ethnicity and racism issues.

MY OEDIPUS COMPLEX by FRANK O’ CONNOR

This story is mainly about the family relationship between the small child and his parents. The boy is addicted to his mother and he takes him as a role model. When his father returns to home from the war , the boy had some problems with his father. This situation exists also in daily life . In childhood, boys are more interested with their mothers and girls are more interested with their fathers . I think the title of the story ” My Oedipus Complex”  is also related to this situation. I think the author wanted to take attention to this topic and i am sure that every child can face with these kind of issues in their family life.
